“We will ensure a demilitarized zone between the warring parties and, to be very specific, we will also act against relevant Russian incursions and attacks. We haven’t reached that yet,” the chancellor said.
Mertz also assessed the US position towards Ukraine: “The fact that the Americans undertook to defend Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, as if it were NATO territory, I believe is a new position of the United States that deserves attention.”
Thus, according to the German chancellor, security guarantees include the readiness of European and American forces to respond to any threats and ensure the restoration of control over demilitarized zones.
