The European Union is considering Estonia’s initiative to ban entry to the Schengen zone for all those who served in the Russian army during the war against Ukraine. The idea is supported by a number of member states, but the final decision has not yet been made. Head of EU diplomacy Kaya Kallas reported that after the meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs, many countries expressed their support for Estonia’s proposal to ban entry to the Schengen area for those who participated in the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. She emphasized that the final list of countries that support the idea is still being finalized: “Many member countries have expressed their support for the proposal, but I cannot say which ones at the moment.”
According to Callas, the EU considers the issue a “clear security risk” for the continent. “We agreed to further consider this proposal and check the mood of the member countries,” she explained.
The chancellor added that the issue will become especially relevant when the current “hot phase” of the war in Ukraine ends. The European Union should prepare clear answers and mechanisms for applying the ban by that time. This initiative aims to strengthen the security of Schengen countries and restrict the movement of those directly involved in hostilities.
