On March 20, at a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, a number of European Union leaders appealed to accelerate the process of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

According to the source of “European Truth” on the conditions of anonymity, many leaders of Member States have expressed support for the early opening of the first section of negotiations.

The discussion of the Ukrainian issue lasted about two hours. Initially, the EU leaders consulted with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, and then continued the discussion in a narrow circle.

The main theme was the acceleration of Ukraine’s integration into the European community, which, according to the source, is a priority for many Member States.

The European Commission earlier this year announced plans to open three negotiation clusters with Ukraine before the end of the Polish presidency in June 2025.

However, the process was complicated by the position of the Hungarian government. In February, it became known that Hungary blocked the opening of the first cluster, insisting on expanding the requirements for Ukraine.

In addition, Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced an optional nationwide survey on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Last week, he published a list of 12 requirements for Brussels, including the key thesis – “Union should be left without Ukraine”.

Despite these obstacles, most EU countries are optimistic about Ukraine’s integration. European leaders emphasize the importance of supporting Kiev in the conditions of war and the need to strengthen unity within the Union.

At the same time, further progress will depend on the parties to find a compromise with Hungary and the implementation of the necessary reforms by Ukraine.

However, the European Union decided to stop discussing the possibility of confiscation of frozen assets of Russia.

The European Union also decided to postpone the introduction of the first counter -measures against the United States related to the tariffs for metals imposed by President Donald Trump until mid -April.
