According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, elections in Ukraine may be held immediately after martial law is lifted.
He stated this in an interview with the American podcaster Lex Friedman, published on the YouTube channel of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
“I believe that the elections will be held immediately after the end of martial law, this is according to the law. Or the parliamentarians need to get together and change the legislation, which will be very difficult to do, because society is against it, because we want elections that we want to trust,” the president said.
Zelenskyi added that in order to organize elections, a special infrastructure must be created for the voting of 8.5 million Ukrainians who are abroad. He also emphasized that millions of citizens remain in the occupied territories.
“What to do with those people? This is a difficult question. And one of the most unfair looks like voting without a million soldiers. That is, it is impossible,” he emphasized.
Zelensky’s legitimacy and elections during the war — what is known
On October 5, 2023, President Zelenskyy stated that elections in Ukraine can be held during martial law, provided changes are made to the legislation and the organization of voting in such a way that it would be safe and that all Ukrainians could participate in the process both inside the country, at the front, and and abroad.
On January 21, Zelenskyi said that he is not postponing the elections, but simply cannot hold them, as this is prohibited by law during wartime.
On February 20, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology published the results of a study according to which, as of February 2024, the vast majority of Ukrainians — 69% — believe that Volodymyr Zelenskyi should remain in the post of president until the end of martial law.
According to the Constitution of Ukraine, another presidential election of Ukraine should be held on March 31, 2024. On May 20, 2024, the five-year term determined by the Constitution from the moment of the inauguration of Volodymyr Zelenskyi expired.
