After the accident of two Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, 61 dead cetaceans were found. The death of 32 of them is probably related to the fuel oil spill.

This is reported by “Crimea. Realiy” with reference to the non-profit organization “Scientific and Ecological Center for the Rescue of Dolphins “Delpha”.

“Let’s start with the most difficult. Since the emergency, we have recorded 61 dead cetaceans, of which the death of 32 individuals is most likely related to the fuel oil spill. Others died before the National Emergency – very old bodies,” the report says.

As noted, for this period of time, such a number of dead is an unusually large figure. In addition, the main part of these cetaceans died in the first 10 days after the disaster.

It is reported that minke whales, which have always been the most vulnerable cetaceans, were mostly affected.

“So far there have been no releases of live dolphins, but we can expect an increase in the number of affected cetaceans in a much larger number than usual in the coming months,” animal rights activists added.
