A diplomatic incident erupted at the International Conference on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Life (CCAMLR) in Hobart after Ukraine accused Russia of detaining one of its leading scientists.

Dr. Leonid Pshenychnov was unable to come to the capital of Tasmania due to his arrest in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea in mid-September.

According to the Ukrainian ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnichenko, Pshenychnov was forced to obtain a Russian passport and charged with “threatening the security of the Russian Federation.”

The Russian documents allege that the scientist allegedly used his research to undermine Russian krill fishing operations off the Antarctic Peninsula and supported tighter fishing limits. They call Pshenychnov a “citizen of Russia who defected to the enemy.”

Ambassador Myroshnychenko emphasized the political motivation of the arrest: “The imprisonment of Dr. Pshenychnov without any evidence is a flagrant violation of human rights.”

The Australian delegation at the conference expressed concern about the situation and called on Russia to provide the scientist with the opportunity to represent Ukraine at future events. The statement also condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling it “illegal and immoral.”

Earlier, the military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced the captured Ukrainian fighter of the “Azov” brigade, Dmytro Remez, to 18 years in a strict regime colony.

It will be recalled that in Russia the court confiscated the assets of businessmen related to Chubais.

Also, in the Russian Federation, the sysadmin of the Hydra darknet market was sentenced to prison for selling drugs.
