Switzerland is ready to host a meeting between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, if both sides agree to it, Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Nicolas Bideau said.
This is reported by Tages Anzeiger, referring to Le Temps.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry said that the International Criminal Court’s warrant for Putin’s arrest will not become an obstacle to the organization of such negotiations, as the country’s government has the right to make an exception for peace negotiations.
Bideau emphasized that after the Peace Summit organized by Ukraine, Switzerland constantly informed Ukraine, Russia and the USA about its readiness to support diplomatic efforts to achieve peace.
On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Russia’s children’s ombudsman, Maria Lvova-Belova. They are accused of illegally deporting children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation in the period from February 24, 2022.
On January 9, 2025, during a speech at Mar-a-Lago, the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, said that Putin wanted to meet with him, and the organization of negotiations had already begun. Before that, on January 7, Trump announced that he was going to meet with Putin after the inauguration.
On January 8, the US Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, stated that he aims to find a way to resolve the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine within 100 days after Trump’s inauguration.
He also emphasized that the elected president wants “save the sovereignty of Ukraine” and find a solution to the war that would be acceptable to Ukraine and Russia.
During a press conference on January 7, Donald Trump, speaking about Russia’s war against Ukraine, expressed hope that he has half a year. Later, the former ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, Valery Chaly, stated that the journalist’s question, which the media failed to hear, was not about the end of the war, but about the meeting with Putin.
