Modern Cyber Police have tools that allow tracking the movement of cryptocurrency in near real time by combining blockchain data with real information about wallet owners. Oleksandr Plahotniuk, the head of the Office for Combating Crimes Related to Virtual Assets of the Cyber Police Department, explained that law enforcement officers see how money “travels” between services, even if criminals try to “confuse” them.

“We can see the movement of funds, we can connect them in chains and understand where exactly they are trying to hide their tracks,” says the police lieutenant colonel.

A separate difficult area is the fight against Darknet marketplaces and attacks on DeFi protocols. Due to the anonymity and speed of transactions, law enforcement officers have to constantly upgrade their skills by learning about smart contracts and code auditing. However, bureaucracy remains the main barrier: “Technology develops faster than laws and international procedures. Therefore, it is necessary to simultaneously update legislation and instruments,” Plahotniuk notes.

Currently, the police is working on implementing mechanisms to confiscate virtual assets located in decentralized systems abroad. Despite the successful attraction of international grants for special equipment, the lieutenant colonel emphasizes the need for systematic state investments: “The demand for high-tech solutions and experts far exceeds the available resources.”
The following years, according to the forecasts of the Cyber Police, will be marked by the fight against attacks enhanced by artificial intelligence.

By the way, in case of bank bankruptcy, Ukrainians cannot count on guaranteed reimbursement of deposits in cryptocurrency or electronic money.

This was reported by the Individual Deposit Guarantee Fund with reference to a nationwide survey on financial awareness
