In the Sumy region, police exposed a 23-year-old resident of Kyiv region, who created a false online platform under the guise of a real cryptocurrency exchange.
This was reported by the Cyber Police of Ukraine.
The attacker created a site that imitated the functionality of the real exchange: it seemed to users that they were buying cryptocurrency, but in fact the money was settled in a fraudster, and bitcoins existed only on screen.
The man had full control over the resource – changing account balances, editing the history of transactions and creating the illusion of real operations. In this way, he cheated a resident of Sumy, who wanted to buy a bitcoin for $ 60,000. The attacker convinced him to register an account on the fake exchange and reported the “successful transfer” of cryptocurrency. In fact, there were no transaction – the funds were appropriated.
After that, the fraudster tried to repeat the scheme – he again contacted the victim and offered another “agreement” worth $ 100,000. However, this time he was already waiting for law enforcement. He was detained during the transfer of money for the power support of the special police company.
During the search, the detainee seized a mobile phone, cash and a Lexus car.
Investigators of the Sumy District Police Department for the procedural leadership of the district prosecutor’s office of the city of Sumy informed him about suspicion under Part 5 of Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – fraud in particularly large sizes.
We will remind, in Ukraine there was a new fraudulent scheme, under which fraudsters are exposed to law enforcement officers and accused the victims of treason.
We have already reported that the STS has exposed fraudsters who send fake emails with a virus.
