Crimean political prisoner Tofik Abdulgaziyev, illegally sentenced by Russia to 12 years in prison, is on the verge of life and death in a Russian colony. The cause was a number of serious diseases, including disseminated tuberculosis of the lungs and neoplasms in the brain.

His wife Aliye Kurtametova reported on the husband’s condition on her Facebook page.

“Since March 2024, Tofik has been on the edge between life and death with variable success. Every time after his health improves, a new disease appears,” she said.

Diagnoses and health problems

Among the main medical problems of Abdulgaziev:

  • Bilateral pneumonia and small left-sided hydrothorax (fluid in the lungs)

  • Anemia

  • Connective tissue dysplasia syndrome with mitral valve damage

  • Chronic heart failure

  • Gastritis

  • Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)

  • Disseminated tuberculosis of the lungs with damage to the intrathoracic lymph nodes

  • Deterioration of vision

  • A tumor in the brain was discovered in December 2025 during an MRI

In October 2024, the family hoped for Abdulgaziev’s discharge from the prison hospital, but already in November, his condition deteriorated sharply. During the examination on December 1, 2025, a tumor was found in the brain, although tests for tumor markers were negative.

Tofiq has been in the hospital since March 2024 and remains in critical condition.

We will remind, in the Russian Federation, a resident of Mariupol was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime colony for alleged “treason”, although no independent investigation was ever conducted.
