The Lychakiv District Court in Lviv has ordered the pre-trial detention of Andrii Trush, a customs officer, in connection with the murder of military officer Oleg Avdiiev. The court ruled that Trush will remain in custody without the possibility of bail, citing concerns that he may attempt to flee the country.
During the court proceedings, Trush stated that on April 2, he visited a funeral service shop with family members following the death of his grandmother. He reported hearing a commotion outside and intervened in a conflict involving his brother and personnel from the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support (TCRSS).
Trush claimed that he was sprayed with pepper spray by TCRSS staff and could not recall further details, stating he found himself at home afterward. He requested the court to consider a more lenient measure, proposing house arrest instead.
The prosecutor, however, argued for Trush’s continued detention, emphasizing the flight risk. The incident leading to Avdiiev’s death occurred on the same day, when an unknown assailant stabbed him in the neck during a military notification operation in Lviv. Avdiiev later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
Oleg Avdiiev, a former Olympic athlete who competed in luge, had joined the TCRSS in November 2025 after previously serving in the border guard until 2005. He represented Ukraine in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.
Following the incident, police confirmed the arrest of Trush, who is now facing charges of intentional murder. The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation. According to preliminary findings, TCRSS staff and police were checking military registration documents on Patona Street when Trush’s brother, also a customs officer, intervened.
Reports indicate that a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Trush allegedly drew a knife and inflicted multiple wounds on Avdiiev, including the fatal stab to the neck.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, a state of martial law and general mobilization have been in effect, with the Ukrainian Parliament extending these measures every three months. Incidents of conflict between TCRSS personnel and civilians have been reported frequently, often exacerbated by the rapid dissemination of negative information about mobilization through social media. Ukrainian military officials attribute this trend to psychological operations conducted by Russia.
The Lychakiv District Court in Lviv has ordered the detention of customs officer Andrii Trush in connection with the murder of military officer Oleg Avdiiev. The incident, which occurred during a military notification operation, has raised concerns about ongoing tensions related to military mobilization in Ukraine.
