In Ukrainian colleges, there is a lack of selection of students for construction specialties. Because of this, the industry is already experiencing an acute shortage of personnel. Young people choose these professions less and less, and some students drop out before completing the course. About this told Deputy Minister of Education and Science for Digital Development, Digital Transformations and Digitalization Dmytro Zavhorodniy.
According to him, the situation is strongly influenced by the migration of young people abroad. This affects not only the entrance campaign, but also those who are already studying. “For example, initially there were 26 students in the group of construction workers, and by the end of the second year, at best, 20 remained. With each year, there are fewer and fewer of them,” explained Zavhorodny.
In addition to the lack of students, there is another serious problem — the outdated educational base. Modern construction requires specialists who know how to work with new equipment, modern equipment and technologies. However, not all colleges have the necessary resources for this.
At the same time, employers are increasingly willing to participate in personnel training themselves. According to the deputy minister, companies are contacting colleges with a specific request. “Give us students. They may have no experience, but if they know how to hold the key in their hands and really want to learn, we will teach them,” Zavhorodnyi relays the words of the employers.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports recognizes that without updating education and without youth being interested in working professions, the shortage of personnel in construction will only grow.
