IN in 2026 The meeting of the Lord will be celebrated in Ukraine February 2 .
Holiday Meeting means “meeting” – the meeting of the 40-day-old Jesus Christ with the righteous elder Simeon in the Jerusalem temple, which symbolizes the meeting of God with humanity and the end of the Christmas period. In the Ukrainian folk tradition, it is also a holiday of the meeting of winter and spring.
The meeting of the Lord has deep spiritual and folk roots, embodied in two main attributes:
-
Street candle (“Hromnytsia”): It is considered the main talisman of the house. It is consecrated in the church and lit during bad weather to protect the home from thunder and lightning. It is also used in difficult moments of life, in case of illness or during sincere prayer.
-
Streeten water: According to beliefs, it has the same healing power as Jordanian. It is sprinkled on houses and livestock before being driven to pasture and is used for healing.
Folk and church traditions highlight a number of restrictions that should be observed on this day:
-
Toil: It is not recommended to clean, wash, repair something or work in the garden.
-
Needlework: Sewing, knitting and embroidery are considered undesirable, because, according to belief, this is how you can “sew up” your well-being.
-
Conflicts: It is forbidden to quarrel, slander or wish harm to someone – this is a holiday of reconciliation and spiritual purity.
-
Long trips: The people believed that due to the conflict between winter and spring, the weather could be changeable, so the road would be difficult.
-
Money transactions: It is not desirable to lend, so as not to take wealth out of the house.
It was on the Epiphany that our ancestors predicted what spring would be like:
-
If the day sunny and warm – spring will come early and be gentle.
-
If on the Epiphany thaw – wait for a long and wet spring.
-
Snowfall on this day portends a rainy spring and late warming.
-
If you can see under the roofs big icicles – this year there will be a good harvest of corn and fruits.
