On the evening of Tuesday, December 24, Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas Eve, or Christmas Eve, which ends the 40-day Christmas fast. This holiday has a special significance in church tradition and is celebrated in Ukraine with unique customs and traditions.

This was reported by the press service of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) on Facebook.

On this day, important religious services take place, including the great times and the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. Priests on this day wear snow-white robes, symbolizing Divine Light and spiritual purity.

Christmas Eve is a special holiday for Ukrainian families, who often prepare a 12-course festive dinner, invite relatives and even bring dinner to their parents. One of the main dishes is kutya – boiled wheat with honey and poppy seeds, which symbolizes eternity, happiness and family.

Families usually sit down at the festive table after the end of the service and the appearance of the first star in the sky, reminiscent of the star of Bethlehem. Traditionally, carols glorifying the birth of the Savior begin to sound.

This year, unfortunately, many Ukrainians will not be able to celebrate the holiday in the usual warm family circle because of the war started by Russia. However, as noted in the OCU, Ukrainians believe that life always wins over death, and truth wins over lies. They are convinced that with God’s help, Ukraine will surely win and once again be able to celebrate Christmas in peace.

Earlier we wrote that this year the absolute majority of Ukrainians will celebrate both Christmas and New Year. This also applies to those respondents who have loved ones at the front.

We will also remind you that Pope Francis held a Sunday prayer on the eve of Christmas, during which he called for a ceasefire in all war zones. He condemned the brutal bombing of schools and hospitals in Ukraine and Gaza.
