Head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) Patriarch Kirill (Volodymyr Gundyaev) traditionally played along with Putin’s propaganda, calling on the inhabitants of the aggressor country of Russia “not to be afraid of nuclear war.”
He said this at a meeting of the World Russian People’s Council, writes the Russian Telegram channel Agency.
“Fear mongering around possible apocalyptic scenarios, excessive alarmism, and speculation on the nuclear issue are not spiritually helpful… We don’t need to play along. Christians are not afraid of the so-called end of the world. We are waiting for the Lord Jesus, who will come to great glory, destroy evil and judge all nations,” said the patriarch.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church added that the “earthly vocation” of Christians is “to be the Lord’s warriors”, “to resist evil” and “to defend high moral ideals”.
Earlier, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin issued a series of nuclear threats towards Ukraine and NATO. In particular, he stated that Russia can hit the “decision-making centers” in Kyiv with Oreshnik missiles, and the General Staff and the Ministry of Defense of the aggressor countries have already “choose targets for attacks.”
Patriarch Kirill repeatedly justified Russia’s war against Ukraine. After Putin announced the mobilization, he promised “atonement for sins” to those who went to fight.
He also stated that by perpetrating the genocide of the Ukrainian people, Russia “defends spiritual values.” The Russian Orthodox Church itself at the World Russian People’s Council under the chairmanship of Patriarch Kirill called the war against Ukraine “sacred”.
