China Reiterates Commitment to Peace Talks Amid Ukraine Conflict

China has reaffirmed its stance on promoting peace negotiations in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing its efforts to halt hostilities since the invasion began.

According to a statement from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, China has consistently sought to facilitate dialogue, highlighting that its commitment to ending the conflict is evident to the international community.

This response comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s remarks regarding China’s lack of involvement in peace efforts. Mao reiterated President Xi Jinping’s four principles for resolving the war, which include respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, adhering to the United Nations Charter, considering the security concerns of countries, and supporting peaceful resolutions.

“This has always been China’s position,” Mao emphasized.

The backdrop to these statements includes Zelensky’s comments made on March 2, where he stressed the importance of engaging China in efforts to end the war, noting its influence over Russia’s supply of arms and dual-use components. He stated, “I believe they have the capacity to impact this. In any case, regarding the supply of certain types of weapons and dual-use items, the Chinese leader could influence all of this. Their involvement would certainly be beneficial for us. So far, we do not see their engagement.”

China has reiterated its commitment to facilitating peace talks in the Ukraine conflict, responding to President Zelensky's call for greater Chinese involvement. The Chinese government emphasizes its longstanding position on respecting sovereignty and supporting peaceful resolutions.
