Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN Geng Shuang called for talks between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible, noting that both sides remain “obsessed” with achieving victory by force.
This is reported by Ukrinform.
“We once again call on the parties to the conflict to demonstrate the political will to start peace talks as soon as possible, meet each other, stop fighting and achieve a ceasefire,” Gen Shuang said during a speech at the UN Security Council meeting dedicated to the situation in Ukraine.
It is noted that during the speech, the Chinese representative called Russia’s war against Ukraine a “Ukrainian conflict” and called for the quick organization of negotiations, emphasizing the consistent position of the People’s Republic of China.
“China has always maintained that it is necessary to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, adhere to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, take seriously the well-founded security concerns of all countries, and support all efforts aimed at peaceful settlement,” the diplomat added.

China’s position on Russia’s war against Ukraine — what is known
In February 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China published a document on the settlement of the war in Ukraine. In particular, Beijing called for an end to hostilities as soon as possible “to restore direct dialogue” between Ukraine and Russia. At the same time, China did not mention the withdrawal of the troops of the aggressor country from Ukraine.
On March 2, 2024, China’s special representative Li Hui met in Moscow with representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry, declaring afterwards that the war in Ukraine should be “resolved through negotiations.”
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Mykhailo Galuzin and Li Hui stated that the settlement of the war in Ukraine is impossible without taking into account Russian interests.
In June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the PRC has economic and political influence on the Russian Federation, so the country “could help” Ukraine.
After the NATO summit in Washington in July, China was named in the final declaration “a decisive factor” contributing to the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. China’s mission to the EU said that such claims were slander and also urged the alliance to stay away from Asia.
On July 23, the then head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, came to China at the invitation of Wang Yi and stayed there until July 25.
After the meeting of the ministers, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China announced that Ukraine allegedly “is ready for negotiations with Russia” and supports China’s position regarding “the Taiwan question”.
