The production department of “Ukrzaliznytsia” (UZ) for the first time concluded contracts with the international Howard G. Buffett Foundation (HGBF) in the amount of $9.2 million. These funds will be directed to the modernization of the capacities of three enterprises of the “Repair and production” department.

The contracts provide for the supply of more than 20 units of high-tech equipment, including:
- lathes and milling machines;
- 3D printers and 3D scanners;
- thermal installations.
This equipment is necessary for setting up our own production of critical spare parts for diesel engines, gears, gears and other components for repairing locomotives. These parts have not been imported into Ukraine for more than five years and are not locally produced.
Yevhen Shramko, a member of the board of UZ, noted that more than 60% of the company’s locomotive fleet needs major repairs. Some of the necessary equipment remained in the occupied territories, and some spare parts were previously purchased in Russia and Belarus. The new cooperation will allow UZ to reduce dependence on imports and increase energy efficiency.
Despite the need for modernization, repair work on the UZ’s own facilities was halved due to the war. The “Repair and production” department has 25 depots and four car repair plants. According to Shramko’s estimates, by the end of the year, this direction may bring a loss of UAH 600 million to the company, since only eight divisions are profitable.
Cooperation with HGBF is part of the technical re-equipment program of Ukrzaliznytsia. The foundation specializes in food and community security, as well as conflict mitigation. For the years 2022-2024, the fund provided assistance to Ukraine in the amount of over $800 million.
As part of improving its financial condition, Ukrzaliznytsia also plans to lease more than 10 facilities through the Prozorro system in the fall of 2025, in particular in Kyiv.
