Today, on August 9, the new Orthodox calendar celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Apostle Matfey, a disciple of Jesus Christ, who was elected instead of Judas Iscariot. The holidays have their own traditions and signs.
Particular attention should be paid to the behavior of nature, because the transition from summer to autumn begins.
On August 9 (August 22 in the old style) the Orthodox mention the Apostle Matphy. He was born in the 1st century in Bethlehem, and from childhood he studied the law of God, and his teacher and mentor was St. Simeon of the God. Subsequently, Matthew joined the followers of Christ: at first he was one of the 70 Apostles, but after Judas Iscariot betrayed Christ, Matthew took his place among the 12 closest disciples.

After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Matphi, like other apostles, was able to preach in different languages of the world and work miracles – healed sick, drove evil spirits and even resurrected the dead.
Like others, the apostle came under persecution. The legend shows that somehow the Lord made him invisible to the pagan, but it was not possible to protect Matphy, and later he was accused of violating the Moses law, condemning to death. The relics of the saint are in the German city of Trir – in the temple, named after the Apostle.
The new style today also honors the martyr Anthony of Alexandria, the Reverend dog of Egypt and martyrs Julian, Markian, John, Jacob and others.
In prayers to the Holy Matphy, they ask for help in the healing of diseases, because the apostle possessed the gift of healing and miracle.
In the folk tradition, the holiday is called Matthew-Narfii and Matfeius-Smeth. It was believed that the Snakes became aggressive this day, they can drink all milk in the pasture. At the same time, the weather begins to deteriorate (therefore Matthew-non-devoured), and the animals were kept at home, in the barn.
On August 9, it is favorable for household chores, traditionally at this time dried and freezing greens for the winter, the day is also considered good for trade and transactions, you can safely go to fairs and markets.
The church calls for spiritual purity and restraint. It is necessary to avoid swearing, anger, envy, it is forbidden to gossip and condemn, refuse help and despair.
The Strict Assumption Lent continues, which will end on August 15 in a new style. Those who are fasting at this time should give up meat and milk foods, eggs and alcohol.
There are also many prohibitions in the folk tradition:
-
On August 9, you can not go to the forest, the snakes are especially aggressive and dangerous;
-
It is not necessary to collect herbs and drink decoctions from them, they can be poison;
-
Do not boast success or purchases, because luck will turn away;

It is also believed that everything started on this day is at risk of ending, so it is better to postpone any initiative for later. The day should be devoted to peace, prayer and internal purification.
By the weather of this day you can find out what autumn and winter will be:
-
The wind is cold wind in the morning – winter will be harsh;
-
The day seems sunny and clear – autumn will also be dry and long, and winter is soft;
-
