On August 2, the world will host the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Roma Genocide during World War II. This memorial date was established by the proclamation of the International Roma Genocide Council, which was approved on November 23, 1996 by Roma organizations of 10 countries in Europe and the United States during a conference in Auschwitz. The date is due to the fact that on the night of August 2 to August 3, 1944, 2897 Gypsies were killed in the Nazi Death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
