Two Ukrainian nuclear power plants — Khmelnytska and Rivne — have been operating at reduced capacity for the past ten days following a Russian attack that damaged a power substation critical to nuclear safety.

This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

“Substations are critically important nodes in the country’s power grid, serving as facilities where the voltage level is transformed and controlled to ensure reliable transmission of electricity. For nuclear power plants (NPP), they are indispensable for maintaining off-site sources of power supply that ensure the operation of safety and cooling systems, therefore their integrity is vital for nuclear safety and security,” the message says.

According to him, on the night of November 7, the stations were disconnected from one of the two power transmission lines with a voltage of 750 kV. The power system operator also ordered a reduction in electricity production at some reactors.

As of today, one of the damaged lines has already been restored, but the other remains out of service. The three reactors continue to operate with limited capacity at the request of the power system operator.

The residents of Magativ emphasized that the stations work stably, and all measures to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities are carried out in accordance with international standards.

In the capital, due to the difficult situation in the energy sector, there may be interruptions in the operation of the city’s electric transport.
