NV found out that in the three quarters of 2024, Ukrainians bought 15% more new cars than a year ago, and August was generally a record for the entire time of the Great War.

47-year-old Iryna from Kyiv is an experienced driver. “Before that I had a ‘diesel’, then a ‘gasoline’, and now a hybrid,” she tells NV about her automotive history.

Two months ago, Iryna, who asked not to be named, traded her Toyota Corolla for a brand new Toyota RAV4 from the dealership because the previous car was consuming too much fuel. “When you stand in traffic jams in Kyiv, it’s probably 10-11 liters [на кожні 100 км]”, – explains the car enthusiast from the capital. She liked the hybrid RAV4, which has a main gasoline engine and an auxiliary electric motor: not only is this crossover more powerful, but its fuel consumption, even in metropolitan traffic jams, barely reaches 6 liters per 100 km. “And this car is more comfortable, it has more space,” adds Iryna.

An additional argument for her was the fact that at one time Toyota was among the first in the hybrid segment. A manager of foreign economic activity by profession, Iryna currently lives in Kamianets-Podilskyi and travels to the capital every month. Therefore, she refused a fully electric car – they say, on one charge, the distance of 440 km cannot be overcome, and she does not want to spend time on a long stop for charging.

The purchase of the hammer — the Japanese SUV Toyota RAV4 with an electric engine — literally in every characteristic clearly reflects the current realities of the domestic market of new passenger cars. Because it is ruled by crossovers, as well as hybrids and electric cars. And the Toyota brand was at the top of sales.

The record of recent years

In the third year of the war and on the eve of a severe winter in terms of energy and an unprecedented increase in taxes, a consumer record occurred in Ukraine. Namely: in August 2024, compatriots purchased as many as 8,383 new passenger cars, according to the data of the market survey from the information and analytical group Auto-Consulting, which is at the disposal of NV. And this is the largest indicator, if we take into account monthly sales, for the entire time since the beginning of the great war. It is about 2-3 thousand. exceeds the average indicators of the last three years and is comparable to the corresponding level of 2021.

It seems that the news from the government building on Hrushevsky Street in Kyiv played a role in the emergence of this summer surge. “A powerful driver for the market was the news about the possibility of increasing the military levy to 15% [на купівлю машин першої реєстрації]which caused a stir among both private buyers and corporate customers, – explains Ruslan Akimov, director of Peugeot Citroen Ukraine. — As a result — 32% market growth in August.”

However, already in September, sales decreased significantly – to 5.8 thousand.

But in general, the market of new cars and small commercial vehicles (LCV) is moving in excess of last year’s schedule: in the three quarters of this year, buyers found 15.1% more cars than in the same period of 2023.

However, market players are not happy with what is happening. “False recovery can hardly be called growth, we would rather talk about stopping the fall,” says Victoria Blinova, head of the marketing communications department of Ukravto Group, which represents a number of brands on the national market, primarily Mercedes-Benz.
