U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon announced the sentence for the attempted assassination of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club in September 2024. The harsh sentence came after a jury last September found Raut guilty of five counts, including attempted murder of a public figure and illegal possession of a weapon.
During the trial, prosecutors proved that Raut planned the attack for weeks, setting up a sniper position in the bushes near the golf course. He was exposed by a Secret Service agent who spotted the barrel of the rifle and opened fire, forcing the assailant to flee. The defense asked the court to limit the sentence to 20 years, emphasizing the respectable age of the defendant, but the judge supported the position of the prosecution, taking into account the aggressive behavior of Raut, who tried to injure himself with a pen directly in the courtroom after the announcement of the jury’s verdict.
