In Ukraine, all services – from rescuers to the military – are preparing for possible Russian strikes against the background of severe frosts. According to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, the cold makes it difficult for the power system to work, and the enemy can take advantage of this moment. At the same time, the state has already strengthened preparations and is keeping the situation under control.
Oleksiy Kuleba, the Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, said that in conditions of severe frosts, Russia may try to strike a new blow at the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to him, all responsible services are preparing for the possible development of events – the State Emergency Service, energy, military and local authorities.
Kuleba emphasized that the weather now significantly affects the stability of the power system, especially during enemy attacks. Frosts down to minus 20 degrees create an additional load on networks, increase electricity consumption and complicate restoration work in case of damage. “This is a challenge, another challenge for us, for the Ukrainian people. I am sure that we will pass it too. It will be difficult, but nevertheless, this winter shows that we are not alone,” said Kuleba.
He emphasized that the support of international partners plays an important role, as well as the effective work of air defense, which allows minimizing the consequences of attacks and maintaining the operation of the energy system even in difficult conditions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also spoke about the threat of new strikes the day before. On January 28, he reported that Ukrainian intelligence records Russia’s preparations for another attack and transmits all the necessary information in a timely manner. According to the head of state, such actions of the Kremlin once again demonstrate Russia’s true intentions and actually devalue any diplomatic efforts to end the war.
The authorities call on citizens to be attentive to air warning signals, to observe safety rules and to be understanding of possible temporary difficulties. All services are working in enhanced mode so that the country can pass the period of severe frosts without critical consequences.
