A taxi driver from Kharkiv was fined 5,100 hryvnias for refusing to communicate with a passenger in the national language.
As reported in the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Olena Ivanovska, the man rudely refused to serve the client in Ukrainian.
The fine was imposed in accordance with Article 188-52 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. In addition, the Commissioner turned to the National Police, SBU and the central office of the taxi service for a legal assessment of the driver’s statements, which may contain justifications for the actions of the aggressor state.
The company reported that the violator’s access to the platform was blocked indefinitely, and all drivers were reminded of the obligation to serve passengers in Ukrainian.
“We have no right to tolerate manifestations of linguistic aggression, behind which there is ideological poison,” Ivanovska said.
The Office of the Ombudsman also noted that a similar violation was recently recorded in Odesa, where a taxi driver was fined 3,400 hryvnias for refusing to provide service in the state language.
In the Kyiv region, the headmistress of one of the educational institutions was dismissed for using the Russian language while performing official duties.
63% of Ukrainians communicate at home only in the state language, 13% of respondents continue to use Russian in everyday life.
