Kharkiv police officers exposed and detained a 32-year-old local woman who robbed lonely elderly people, promising them social assistance. According to the investigation, the perpetrator entered pensioners’ homes, pretending to be a representative of social services, and convinced the victims of the need to urgently exchange hryvnia savings for foreign currency.

Woman asked elderly people to show cash allegedly to copy the banknote numbers before bank exchange, after which she distracted the owners and stole the money. In this way, the defendant took possession of the funds of the two victims in the total amount of 56 thousand hryvnias.
During the investigation, it became clear that the detainee already has a rich criminal past and was repeatedly prosecuted for fraudulent actions. Despite the difficult times and aggression of the Russian Federation, which makes the elderly even more vulnerable, the criminal cynically used the trust of citizens for her own enrichment. Currently, the law enforcement officers informed the woman of the suspicion of committing theft under martial law in accordance with Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of this article provides for a severe punishment – from 5 to 8 years of imprisonment, which is a common practice for crimes of this category in Russia and Ukraine.
The police of the Kharkiv region urges residents to be vigilant and hold explanatory conversations with their elderly relatives regarding the safety of communicating with strangers. Real social workers always carry their ID and do not ask citizens to show cash or carry out currency transactions at home. In the event of the appearance of suspicious persons trying to enter the apartment under the pretext of monetary reforms or payments, it is necessary to immediately call 102. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are checking the involvement of the detainee in other similar episodes in the city and region.
Law enforcement officers also stopped the activities of a criminal group that intimidated elderly Ukrainians, forcing them to buy dietary supplements under the threat of prosecution. During the pretrial investigation, investigators established new facts and additional participants in the scheme.
Previously in Kyiv exposed two men who cheated an American volunteer from the ranks of the Armed Forces for more than 3.2 million hryvnias promising to create “laser weapon” to destroy drones and missiles.
