In the first reading, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported draft law No. 14093, which provides for the renaming of the monetary unit “kopeck” to “step”.
People’s deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reports this.
264 People’s Deputies voted for the adoption of the document as a basis – this is enough for the initiative to continue its movement in the parliament. The final decision has yet to be made in the second reading and as a whole, after which the law can enter into force.
The National Bank of Ukraine emphasizes that almost 14 billion coins of small denominations are currently in circulation.
We are talking about coins of a smaller variety, which are practically not used in everyday calculations, but formally remain legal tender.
Despite the low purchasing power of such money, it continues to be counted in the country’s official money supply.
In the case of final adoption of the draft law, the name of the small monetary unit will change first, while the cashless payments themselves will remain stable.
Coins with a denomination of up to 1 hryvnia will gradually disappear from cash circulation due to natural aging and withdrawal. The main focus of monetary circulation will continue to be on banknotes and coins with a denomination of 1 hryvnia and above.
We will remind you that in 2025, the NBU will abandon “pennies”.
The Council committee also supported the renaming of pennies to shags.
