This achievement of 63-year-old gardener Yuriy Kozhemyakin was entered into the National Register of Records in the “Living Nature” category, as reported by the head of the register, Lana Vetrova. The giant fruit has a girth of 50 centimeters, which makes it the absolute national leader in terms of size and weight.
The record holder ripened on a three-year-old French apple tree of the Jumbo Pomme variety, which is genetically predisposed to the formation of large fruits. The uniqueness of this particular case is that during flowering, three fruits were tied on the branch, but the tree left only one. Thanks to this, all the nutritional resources of the young sapling were directed to the development of a single “heavyweight”, which as a result needed special supports and garters so that the branch would not break under the critical weight.
Yuriy Kozhemyakin, who is a veterinarian by profession, dedicated his success to his grandfather and grandmother, who instilled in him a love of gardening as a child. Although the Ukrainian fruit is impressive in its scale, the world record is still held by the Japanese variety “Hokuto” with a weight of 1,849 kg. Nevertheless, the Kyiv apple has demonstrated the extraordinary potential of foreign breeding under the condition of professional care in Ukrainian climatic conditions.
It will be recalled that the New Zealander entered the Guinness Book of Records with a name of 2253 words.
The Guinness Book of Records also named the oldest man in the world.
