A resident of the Transcarpathian region and six of his accomplices stole cars during the occupation of Kyiv region in 2022, and drove them for sale in the EU.
This is reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to the investigation, in 2022, during the temporary occupation of the Kyiv region, about 140 cars that belonged to car dealerships in the capital were stolen. Subsequently, some of these cars began to appear in offers for sale. After changing the identification numbers of car bodies, they were sold in Ukraine and abroad.
A resident of Zakarpattia Oblast developed a scheme for converting stolen cars. He involved in illegal activities several local men and women, as well as residents of Cherkasy and Kyiv regions. Each of the members of the organization was responsible for the direction entrusted to him – some were engaged in the production of forged documents, searching for persons with the right to travel abroad, and others – transported cars to the border region, after which they sold “double” cars.
The conversion of stolen cars was carried out in the territory of Kyiv and the region in garages. There, accomplices cut off body numbers and replaced units. After that, the cars were transported to Transcarpathia and driven across the border to the countries of the European Union, where authorized persons legalized them by registering them as new vehicles.
In the course of the investigation, it was established that the inspector of one of the customs posts of the Transcarpathian Customs contributed to the formal customs control at the crossing of the border of stolen cars. During his work shifts, the suspects exported to Hungary cars with fictitious number plates, documents on them and issued international insurance policies. When crossing the border, the customs officer entered fictitious car data into the official databases.
According to this scheme, the suspects cleared customs and sold more than a dozen cars.
7 members of the organized group were notified of suspicion based on the facts of concealment of a crime, use of a knowingly forged document and legalization of proceeds obtained through crime (Part 3 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 396, Part 3 of Article 28, Part 4 of Article 358 , Part 3 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Meanwhile, in Rivne, the law enforcement officers had to arrange a race with a 14-year-old boy who was fleeing in a stolen car. He fled in a stolen car.
The number of car thefts in Ukraine in 2023 compared to 2022 decreased by almost 90%.
