The WBC Grand Prix in Riyadh: who won and where the Ukrainians have reached

We summarize the results after the last duels of the competition”, — write: sport.ua

On December 20, the first WBC tournament finished in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. They called it the WBC Grand Prix, because they played for places in the top ten weight categories, 200 thousand US dollars and the unique Jose Suleiman Cup.

Ukrainian boxers also participated in the tournament, but none of them reached the finals. We tell how the competition ended and who won.

Brandon Mosqueda UD 8 Muhamet Camili. The second featherweight division One of the best pairings of the tournament in terms of how the guys box. Mexican Mosqueda is one of those who could give Camila a close range fight and not be afraid to miss. There are several reasons. One of them is Brandon’s physical strength. The second is his ability to defend himself.

Surprisingly, both worked. Camili tried to press the opponent, but did not hit and because of this did not look the best against the background of the opponent. Heavy blows did not affect the opponent, because Mosqueda did not allow himself to be affected, and endured what came.

Victory is not easy, but comfortable. Brandon showed that at the age of 21, his boxing level is already quite high. He navigates well in difficult situations and gets out of them without any particular problems.

Ukraine was represented in this division by:

– Ihor Semonchuk (eliminated from the competition in the 1st round, gave a good fight to Kamila, who reached the final);

– Oleksandr Solomennikov (eliminated from the tournament twice, because he was a replacement fighter, lost in the first confrontation to a boxer from Ghana, and in the second – to an athlete from France).

Carlos Utria UD 8 Mujibillo Tursunov. The final in the first semi-medium division

The confrontation of a heavy, bulky Colombian with a heavy punch against a classic Uzbek amateur. Here the chances were 50 to 50, before the start of the duel, that’s for sure.

There were enough advantages in Utria. Both the size and the impact force. And in general, he showed himself to be a reasonably prudent boxer who can knock down any opponent quite easily. However, it was Tursunov’s style that could become a problem for him. Multi-punch combinations and constant mobility on the feet are the opposite style that should cause problems for the Colombian.
However, the Uzbek came under the curtain of the meeting with problems. Utria broke his opponent’s nose in the 1st round and, while he was fresh, smashed him with no problem. After that, he sat down physically, and the duel became even. However, in general, Carlos preferred to let the opponent near him, realizing that nothing difficult would come.

Not perfect, but a very smart and definitely confident victory for Utria. He declared himself very well at this tournament. Now I wonder if this will lead to any interesting career extensions.

Ukraine was represented in this division by:

– Danylo Lozan (reached the semi-finals – this is the most successful performance of a Ukrainian at the WBC Grand Prix).

Lauzan distinguished himself with fiery performances, dissection, knockout and generally good boxing. However, in the semi-finals, he just lost to the same Tursunov. The Uzbek set too high a pace and delivered too many accurate shots – the Ukrainian could not cope with this.

Dillon Biggs UD 8 Derek Poemerlo Dillon Biggs Australian Biggs was definitely not the favorite in the division. He was already beaten prematurely – it was done by the much smaller Nikita Tsiu. And there were enough talented guys in the category.

However, talent in boxing is not everything. Dillon is a very driven and experienced lad who was doggedly going to the finals. There he met the category favorite Canadian Derek Pomerleau. This guy was the highest among all participants in the ratings of his division, and the power of the blow overturned even those fights where he was clearly inferior before that.

But with Biggs, neither the place in the ratings nor the power of the shot helped. The first means nothing at all in the ring, when the opponent has a plan for the fight and clearly follows it. The second simply did not impress the big and physically strong boxer.

Dillon had to work in the ring. It was not an easy confrontation, because Pomerlo is a difficult shulga who fought to the very end. However, by the time the bout was over, it was clear that Biggs had taken the win pretty easily.

Ukraine was represented in this division by:

– Maksym Molodan (eliminated in the 2nd round of the tournament, losing to a boxer from France);

– Dmytro Rybalko (eliminated in the 1/4 finals, losing just to Pomerlo, in the 1/8 finals Dmytro beat Muhammed Issa, who was perceived as one of the favorites in the category).

– Petro Frolov (lost to Biggs in the 1/4 finals of the tournament, but the fight was quite competitive and it was not a bad performance).

Kevin Ramirez UD 8 Ahmet Krnich. The final in the heavyweight division The bantamweight looked pretty weird this tournament. There were experienced and not even young boxers who were over 30. Could they be called prospects? Unlikely, but maybe there was no other choice.

Krnich, for example, is a former kickboxer. However, neither this experience nor his size allowed him to beat the Argentine. Ramirez is among another branch of the competition, namely in heavyweight. Due to the fact that only these divisions were here, a lot of conditional cruisers got to him. Kevin is just one of those.

But the significant advantage of the opponent in size did not affect. Ramirez has enough striking power, he hits long and persistent combinations. Therefore, Krnich’s activity in response was definitely not enough.

This is a big breakthrough for Ramirez. He won a division filled with ex-Olympians and just big guys.

Ukraine was represented in this division by:

– Pavlo Yuskiv (lost by knockout in the 1st round to an American, it was the best knockout of the round, but you definitely cannot bring this to the achievement of our boxing);

– Vitaly Stalchenko (another nominal cruiserweight, lost to Tsotne Rohavi, although many fans call the result of that fight controversial);

– Tsotne Rohava (lost to Krnich after Stalchenko, for some reason he suffered a lot physically after the start and lost at the 1/4 final stage).
