The Mexican entered the ring Saul Alvarez (61–2–2, 39 KOs) and a Puerto Rican contender Edgar Berlanga (22–0, 17 KOs)
At stake were the WBC and WBO second middleweight championship belts (up to 76.2 kg), which are owned by a Mexican named Canelo.

In the third round, Saul Alvarez knocked Berlanga down.
According to the results of 12 rounds, the victory of Alvarez was recorded: 117–110, 119–109 and 119–109 in favor of the champion.
