The main dispute concerns the degree of compression in the cylinders of the power plant. The current regulations set it at 16:1, but there have been rumors throughout the winter that Mercedes has allegedly found a way to bump that up to around 18:1 when the engine is running. Competitors – Ferrari, Honda and Audi – appealed to the FIA with a demand to intervene and review the compliance of such technology with the regulations.
The federation is considering clarifying or changing the rules, potentially as early as 2027. In response, Mercedes threatened that in the event of a directive that would force engine redesign, all eight German-engined cars from the first stage in Australia could be withdrawn – the Mercedes, McLaren, Williams and Alpine teams.
It is also reported about the possibility of a collective action against the FIA due to alleged violations of the sports and technical regulations. However, it is rather a tool of pressure.
