On February 11, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi commented on France’s attempts to resume direct dialogue with Moscow, stressing the need for pressure rather than simple communication.
He said this during an online conversation with the mass media, Glavkom writes.
During the conversation with Emmanuel Macron, the head of state received a report on the visit of diplomatic adviser Emmanuel Bonn to the Russian Federation, which took place in early February. Zelensky expressed his belief that the Russian Federation perceives European initiatives regarding “clean” dialogue as weakness and uses them to humiliate the subjectivity of Europe in the negotiation process.
The leaders’ conversation took place against the background of the intensification of tripartite consultations in the Ukraine-USA-Russia format, the second round of which ended on February 5 in Abu Dhabi. As a result of these meetings, with the mediation of the US special envoy Steve Witkoff, the parties agreed on the first major exchange of prisoners in five months under the 314-for-314 formula. Despite this humanitarian success, Zelensky emphasized that political differences remain deep, and Macron’s desire to find an “alternative path” should not undermine the unity of allies and the position of power towards the aggressor.
The next stage of coordination of the positions of Kyiv and Paris will be the Munich Security Conference, which will be held on February 13-15, 2026. Zelensky and Macron agreed to hold a substantive meeting there to coordinate steps before the upcoming summit in the United States. Ukraine insists that Europe should be part of the negotiations not through separate contacts with the Russian Federation, but through increased military and economic support to Ukraine, which will be a valid argument in the dialogue with the Kremlin.
Earlier, the chief diplomatic adviser to the President of France Emmanuel Bonn made an unannounced visit to Moscow, where he met with the assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he has invited several European leaders to join his initiative to resume direct dialogue with Russia, particularly with President Vladimir Putin. Macron emphasized that this desire arose because of the new phase of the war in Ukraine, when the parties can start peace talks.
