The publication of the Financial Times regarding the potential announcement of elections and a referendum in Ukraine already on February 24 has all the signs of an information leak.
Unfortunately, we live in an era when such information manipulation becomes more than objective information. But there is no smoke without fire.
The fact is that the preparation of the infrastructure for the election campaign has actually already begun. In particular, the voter’s register started working after a long time of being in a frozen state. We see that in the information field, everyone is “at a low start”: both potential participants in the presidential race, and political forces that will participate in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada.
But still, I believe that any such announcements on February 24 are unlikely. And the question is not that it is impossible. Ukraine is a country of unlimited possibilities in the sense that everything is possible with us, including direct violations of the Constitution. And no one pays attention to this, because the “Constitution is on pause.” It is the legal factor that is not dominant in this matter.
In my opinion, somewhere before the middle of March, either this process will be launched, or it will definitely not happen by autumn. Zelensky will bide his time, realizing that he will not win competitive elections, realizing that there are too many questions for the authorities. That is why it is better to drag out time, to say that it is “out of time”, there are no safety conditions and everything else.
But let’s not forget that holding elections is an element of Trump’s plan. I think that now we will see what will be more powerful: either the pressure of Trump and his instruments of coercion to the exemplary political behavior of our president, or Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be able to “pass between the drops” again. In any case, the election campaign will most likely not start on February 24.
