NABU head Semyon Krivonos claims that the effectiveness of his department is not determined by the money returned to the budget. He said this during the briefing, answering to the question of why Ukraine spends much more money on the maintenance of NABU than it returns to the state through its activities, UNIAN reports.

According to him, there is a side financial impact from the activities of NABU, but the return of corruption funds to the budget is not considered by this anti-corruption body as its task.
“How to evaluate the financial result of NABU’s actions? Returning money to the state budget is not our main task,” Kryvonos said.
In response to the clarification that NABU was created specifically to fight corruption and embezzlement of taxpayers’ funds, its head noted: “there is a corruption component in the SBI as well, and their funding is greater than ours.”

In the view of the director of NABU, the assessment of the work of the Bureau should not be approached with economic criteria, since the receipt of money to the budget is not the function of the Bureau.
“I want to find out in this context, whether the main goal of NABU is to confirm its economic justification? Does this mean that in a year it is necessary to return as much money as was spent on its operation, on wages for detectives, on fuel for cars, cartridges…” he asked.
The director of NABU is sure that the financial allegations that NABU “does not earn enough” are manipulations by opponents of the anti-corruption bureau: “But this is what our opponents often abuse: look, they spent 2.6 billion hryvnias on them, and they returned 600 million. That is, everything is measured through the financial result?”.

As previously reported, NABU will receive UAH 2.6 billion of budget funds per year from January, while last year it returned only UAH 680 million to the budget. Without the Bureau, the Ukrainian budget would have an additional almost UAH 2 billion every year. In general, during the 10 years of its existence NABU used more than UAH 10.6 billion of taxes of Ukrainian citizens.
