Scientists of the Chernobyl Radiation-Ecological Biosphere Reserve recorded a unique bird of prey on the protected territory – the winter buzzard.

This representative of the hawk family is a close relative of the common buzzard, but has its own characteristics that allow it to survive in extreme conditions.
Wintering flies to Ukraine only during the cold season. Its appearance in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone indicates the preservation of favorable conditions for the wintering of rare species of feathered predators.
The main distinguishing feature of the winter coat is the thick plumage on the paws, which reaches to the very toes.
It is thanks to this feature that the bird got its Latin name “lagopus” (hare’s foot), because such “clothing” reliably protects it from the fierce northern frosts.
“This is a bird of the hawk family, a close relative of the common buzzard, but much better adapted to the harsh conditions of the northern tundra. Throughout the territory of Ukraine, the wintering shrike (Buteo lagopus) is a migratory and wintering species. Usually, these birds are in our country from October to March,” said the reserve’s researchers.
The color of the bird is mainly light with dark spots. Such natural camouflage makes it almost invisible against the background of the winter landscape, which helps the predator to remain invisible to its prey.
