Interlocutors of “European Truth” reported that the proposal to include in the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia a complete ban on the provision of maritime services in the EU to tankers transporting Russian oil delayed the process of preparing the package of sanctions – due to the agreement of this initiative at the G7 level.
“Joining the G7 states, and primarily the United States and Great Britain, in the ban on Russian oil shipments would make this measure more painful for Russia and its economy, and would also remove objections from a number of EU maritime states, whose budgets largely depend on port revenues, the diplomats said,” – notes “Europeyska Pravda” with reference to sources.
Discussions with the G7 states regarding maritime sanctions have been ongoing this week, and have caused a delay in the announcement of the 20th package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation, which was expected on Wednesday, February 4.
However, it is possible that the 20th package of sanctions will be announced on Friday, February 6, or on Monday, February 9.
What happened before:
- The ban on the provision of maritime services to Russian vessels is one of the expected components of the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia, which are planned to be adopted symbolically on February 24, the fourth anniversary of the full-scale war.
- The European Commission was expected to publish a proposal on the contents of the package this week.
- It is known that France wants the 20th package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation to be “especially tough” with regard to the “shadow fleet”.
