During the exchange, a border guard from the city of Borzna, Chernihiv Region, Vitaliy Shpitalnyi, who was captured in May 2024 and before that, held a position on his own for three days, returned from Russian captivity.

“It is with great joy and sincere pride that we share the good news for our entire community – Vitaly Volodymyrovych Shpitalnyi, a resident of Borzna, has returned home from enemy captivity. His return is another ray of light in difficult times for the country… Vitaly Volodymyrovych persevered, preserved his dignity and strength of spirit, proving to the whole world that the Ukrainian Defenders cannot be broken,” the message reads.
According to the information of the head of Chernihiv OVA Vyacheslav Chaus, the border guard is 49 years old, he is a fighter of the 105th detachment. Vitaly was captured in Donetsk region in May 2024. Before that, he held the position himself for three days – water and food were dropped by his comrades from drones. After the enemy assault, the fighter was captured, where he spent almost two years.
Ukraine spent exchange of prisoners, during which 157 Ukrainians – servicemen and civilians – returned home. Among those released are soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard and the State Border Service.
We will remind you that the youngest released defender is 23 years old – he was captured at the age of 19 during the defense of Mariupol and was sentenced by a Russian court to life imprisonment.
Today, February 5, 2026, during the exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia, a resident of Mariupol, Donetsk region, who was in Russian captivity for almost four years, returned home. Oleksandr was captured from the Azovstal plant on May 18, 2022.
