The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, states that the situation at the front remains difficult, and Russian troops continue offensive actions along the entire length of the battle line with varying intensity.

At the same time, according to him, the Defense Forces of Ukraine also actively carry out offensive and counter-offensive actions, and in some areas, about a quarter of combat clashes are precisely the actions of Ukrainian units in the offensive.

The goal of the offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is to keep the enemy in constant tension, inflict losses on him and prevent him from moving forward, the Commander-in-Chief said during a conversation with journalists, a Radio Liberty correspondent reports.

According to Syrskyi, this tactic gives results: in January, the enemy did not achieve any significant operational successes.

The commander-in-chief also noted that the active front line is about 1,200 kilometers long.

“Over the past six months, the number of the enemy group has remained approximately at the same level – 711-712 thousand people together with the operational reserve. At the same time, the occupiers have fully fulfilled and even exceeded their plans for equipping their army. This indicates that the level of their losses exceeds the possibility of replenishment. On average, the enemy loses about 1,000-1,100 servicemen,” Sirskyi said.

The main efforts of the Russian army are concentrated in the Pokrovsk, Ocheretyn and Oleksandriv areas, says the commander-in-chief. Also, according to him, there is a concentration of forces and means in the Kramatorsk direction, in particular in the direction of Kostyantynivka. Active hostilities also continue in the Lyman direction. The intensity of hostilities, in particular, depends on weather conditions.

“The situation in the Kupyansk direction has not changed. Despite repeated statements by the leadership of the armed forces of the Russian Federation about the alleged taking of Kupyansk under control, the real state of affairs has not changed. Enemy sabotage groups numbering 40-50 people remain in the city. The defense forces of Ukraine are carrying out counter-sabotage measures, the enemy is suffering constant losses. The situation is complicated by the enemy’s active use of fiber-optic controlled drones at distances of 30 km or more,” he said.

Syrskyi said that the situation has stabilized in the Siversk region as well. “This became possible thanks to the effective actions of the assault units. Measures were taken against those commanders who for a long time provided false information about the situation in the Siversk region and, as a result, allowed the loss of this settlement. At the moment, the fighting here has a low intensity, the enemy has not made any progress in a month,” he said.

According to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the most intense fighting is taking place in the Pokrovsk region, in particular in the Ocheretyn region and in the Rodyn region, where the enemy has concentrated the largest number of forces and assets.

“Directly in Pokrovsk, the Defense Forces of Ukraine control the northern part of the city. The situation is similar in Myrnograd. Measures are being taken to improve the tactical position of Ukrainian troops. An additional complication is the enemy’s use of long-range drones. A complex of anti-drone measures is being used. The situation remains difficult,” Syrskyi said.

According to him, intensive fighting continues in the Gulyaipol area, where the enemy has concentrated the forces of four armies and has been conducting “intense battles” for almost two months.

The day before, RFE/RL’s sources at the General Staff of the Armed Forces reported that Russian forces had reduced the number of assaults on the front after Ukraine and SpaceX agreed to block unregistered Starlink satellite internet terminals. According to the report, the number of assaults has decreased in some places, and in some areas they have stopped altogether.

The American Institute for the Study of War said in its report dated February 4 that Russian forces are creating the conditions for future offensive operations against Kostiantynivka, using lessons learned during the Pokrovsk offensive.

On January 22, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that the Defense Forces continue to restrain Russian troops in Pokrovsk and Myrnograd in Donetsk region, as small groups of the Russian Federation are trying to infiltrate the northern regions of both cities. He noted that as a result of the active assault actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, another attempt by the Russian invaders to seize these settlements was thwarted.

Fighting in Pokrovsk has been going on since October 2025, when the Russian army managed to break through to the city after several months of fighting on its slopes. Almost immediately, Russian soldiers began to be recorded in Pokrovsk’s satellite city of Mirnograd.

The Pokrovsky direction, according to the reports of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, constantly leads in terms of the number of Russian assaults.
