Russia destroyed the CHP plant on the left bank of the Dnieper in Kyiv, leaving tens of thousands of people without heat. EU Ambassador to Ukraine Kateryna Maternova described the consequences of the shelling and called on the world to react. Ukrainians are doing everything to survive one of the strongest winters in recent years.
Yesterday I stood among the ruins of a thermal power plant on the left bank of the Dnieper in Kyiv. This CHP plant once heated more than 1,200 high-rise buildings – tens of thousands of people. Russia has attacked it more than 20 times this heating season, but Ukrainian repairmen kept the station afloat. The attack from Monday to Tuesday completely destroyed it – five ballistic missiles did their job. “The damage is so serious that the heat supply will not be restored this season,” Maternova states.
The world lived under the false illusion that Russia was observing a truce regarding energy infrastructure. No, that was a lie. They used the two-day pause to stockpile more missiles — and then struck. Almost 1,000 generators from the rescEU reserve have been mobilized in recent weeks. “We are doing everything possible to help Ukrainians survive one of the strongest winters in recent years,” the ambassador emphasized.
She said that during her stay among the ruins, she felt both sadness and anger. “I can’t get used to the fact that in the 21st century, people in Europe are freezing in their homes. Last week, a woman who survived the Holocaust died of hypothermia in her home in Podil,” Maternova shared. At this time, Russia continues to violate all the rules of war, leaving people without heat and threatening their lives. “Shame on you, Russia,” the ambassador concluded.
This attack shows how brutal modern warfare is and how important it is for the international community to support Ukraine. Every missile, every shelling is not just damaged infrastructure, it is the life of real people, their survival and dignity.
