On February 6, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of St. Venerable Vukol, Bishop of Smyrna. He was one of the first disciples of the Apostle John the Theologian and devoted his life to the spread of Christianity. Among the people, this day was also associated with caring for livestock, faith in the protection of the home and prayers for the family.

On February 6, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Venerable Vukola, one of the first bishops of the Christian Church. He lived in the 1st century, at a time when Christianity was just beginning to spread and was not yet widely accepted. St. Vukol was a student of the holy apostle Ivan the Theologian – one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. It was Ivan the Theologian who consecrated him as the bishop of the city of Smyrna, which was located in Asia Minor. Today it is the territory of modern Turkey.

At that time, being a Christian was not easy. People often experienced persecution, misunderstanding and even danger to their lives. But Vukol was not afraid. He openly preached his faith, supported people and helped those in need. He was known as a very gentle and sincere person. He did not force people to believe, but set an example with his own life. That is why many people themselves came to faith, seeing his kindness and care.

Saint Vukol especially helped those who were left without support – widows, orphans, the poor and the sick. He was not only a priest for people, but also a real spiritual mentor and protector. He was often called the “good shepherd” because he sincerely cared for his flock and did not leave people in difficult moments.

A miracle after the saint’s death

According to church traditions, a miracle happened after the death of St. Vukola. A myrtle tree grew at his burial place. People believed that this tree had healing power. Sick people came to him and prayed. Many believed they received healing or relief. This became a symbol of the fact that even after death the saint continues to help people. That is why his memory has been preserved for almost two thousand years.

Why did the people call this day Vukol the calf

In the Ukrainian folk tradition, this day received a special name – Vukol-telyatnyk. This is due to the fact that the saint was considered the patron saint of domestic animals, especially calves and cattle. It was during this period that calves were often born, and people believed that praying to the saint would help keep them healthy. On this day, the peasants paid special attention to the economy. They checked the cattle, cleaned the barn, gave the animals better food. People believed that if they take good care of animals on this day, the year will be good. It was also believed that Saint Vukol can protect the household from diseases and losses.

Traditions of this day

On this day, believers went to church or prayed at home. People asked the saint for protection, health and peace for the family. We especially prayed for:

  • children’s health,
  • peace in the family
  • home protection
  • well-being and peace,
  • animal health.

This day was considered good for quiet affairs, prayer and care for loved ones. People tried not to quarrel or say bad words. They believed that the day should be spent in peace. It was also customary to help others – relatives, neighbors or those who needed support.
