Citing two sources familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported that WP conducted a massive layoff that significantly reduced sports coverage, local news and international coverage. According to NYT sources, the company has laid off about 30 percent of all its employees. This includes people from the business unit and more than 300 of the approximately 800 journalists in the newsroom.
“I still can’t understand that my four years of covering the war in Ukraine for The Washington Post are over – just before the anniversary of the invasion. I plan to stay in Kyiv, because this story is more important than ever,” wrote Siobhan O’Grady, head of WP’s Kyiv bureau, on the Kh social network.
Correspondent Lizzie Johnson, who worked in Ukraine, also announced her dismissal on the X social network: “I was just fired from The Washington Post in the midst of hostilities. I have no words. I am devastated.”
