According to Franken, the cause of the smoke was overheating of the SCR unit, which is part of the exhaust system.
There was no open fire, but a dense cloud of non-toxic smoke formed. The fire brigade promptly cooled the overheated areas. The crew was not injured, the ship itself is also safe.
The Minister of Defense called the incident “remarkable” and drew parallels with recent events in Europe.
“We must thoroughly investigate: what happened, who was involved in it and how it became possible,” said Franken, recalling the arrest of two people in Germany who are suspected of an attempt sabotage against warships in the port of Hamburg.
Earlier it was reported that the Minister of Justice of Germany Stephanie Hubig is speaking for making an amendment to the Criminal Code, directed against the so-called “disposable agents” – executors of sabotage who act on the orders of foreign states.
