Exhibition of the Singapore Air Show / Illustrative photo WikipediaRussian defense companies have disappeared from major air shows in Asia. According to experts, this indicates the reduction and increasing concentration of the country’s arms export industry. Defense News writes about it.
According to journalists, for the second year in a row, Russian manufacturers were absent from the list of participants of the Singapore Air Show – the largest aerospace exhibition in Asia, which takes place from February 3 to 8.
Previously, the Russian Federation had a much larger presence at the event and even launched joint exhibition pavilions at the 2020 show for Russian Helicopters and the United Aircraft Corporation.
“What we are seeing is not a strategic withdrawal from Asia, but a forced redistribution under the influence of serious structural constraints. Russia’s absence from these key exhibitions reflects the reduction, regionalization and increased concentration of its arms export profile, which has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine,” explained Francesco Schiavi, a researcher at the Swiss Middle East Institute.
At the same time, over the past year, Russian arms manufacturers have been increasingly gaining potential customers in the Middle East, especially in the Persian Gulf region. This is evidenced by Russia’s presence at defense exhibitions such as IDEX and NAVDEX in February 2025 in Abu Dhabi.
Schiavi says Moscow’s activity in the Middle East and Africa is “selective and compensatory,” citing Algeria’s purchase of Su-57s and continued cooperation with Mali, eastern Libya and Ethiopia as examples.
