European countries are preparing a new reinforcement of air defense for Ukraine. We are talking about modern anti-aircraft systems with anti-drone radar, which are specially adapted to combat drones. Deliveries may begin as early as next year. It became known about it publications Defense Express.

It is a joint initiative of European countries aimed at strengthening Ukrainian air defense. The new project provides for the supply of anti-aircraft systems in a special configuration, specifically aimed at countering drones, which Russia uses en masse for attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Denmark and Sweden became the key participants of the initiative. Copenhagen has officially joined Stockholm in financing the procurement of Tridon Mk2 anti-aircraft systems for Ukraine. It is not about standard installations, but about a variant with a modern Swedish anti-drone radar. The Swedish government notes that other countries have already been invited to join the project. If this happens, deliveries may be increased. The start of the transfer of complexes to Ukraine is expected within the next 12 months.

Sweden is financing the project as part of several military aid packages. According to official figures, in the 18th, 19th and 20th packages, Stockholm allocated 2.1 billion Swedish kroner, which is about 235 million dollars. For the first time, information about this initiative appeared back in February 2025, but only now have the details become known.

Denmark, for its part, is sending 480 million kroner to the project, which is equivalent to about 53.7 million dollars. According to estimates, these funds are enough to fully equip one battalion with anti-aircraft systems. The initiative’s total budget currently stands at nearly 2.58 billion kroner, or about $289 million. In Stockholm, it is not hidden that they are ready to order additional Tridon Mk2 installations if other countries join the joint procurement. So far, new participants have not been officially announced, but in Europe, they are increasingly talking about the need for collective support of Ukrainian air defense.

The Tridon Mk2 system was first publicly presented by BAE Systems at Eurosatory 2024. It is based on the well-known Bofors 40mm gun, which has been used on various platforms for over 90 years and has a reputation for reliability and effectiveness. For Ukraine, this complex will receive an important addition — the Saab Giraffe 1X radar. This is a modern radar station with a target detection range of up to 75 kilometers, specially adapted to work against small and low-flying targets, in particular drones.

In addition to the installations themselves, the package for Ukraine provides for the supply of spare parts and a significant amount of ammunition. In particular, we are talking about projectiles with programmable detonation P3, which significantly increase the effectiveness of defeating drones. According to the tactical and technical characteristics, the Tridon Mk2 is capable of hitting air targets at a distance of up to 12 kilometers. The rate of fire is between 200 and 300 rounds per minute, which makes the system particularly effective against swarms of drones.

Basically, the complex is placed on a Scania truck with a 6×6 wheel formula, which ensures high mobility. At the same time, the system can be installed on other platforms, both wheeled and tracked, depending on the customer’s needs.

Analysts note that the appearance of such complexes in Ukraine can significantly strengthen the protection of cities, critical infrastructure and military facilities against massive drone attacks. Europe recognizes that the fight against drones has become one of the key challenges of modern warfare, and new military aid for Ukraine is now being adapted to these threats.
