The reports of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirm Russia’s use of banned chemical substances, Ukrainian Ambassador to the Netherlands Andriy Kostin said. According to him, the information made public last year indicates that Russia used chemical weapons, prohibited by the international Convention, during hostilities against the Ukrainian defense forces.
Kostin emphasized that such conclusions are supported by the results of internal investigations. He noted that one of the key directions of the Embassy of Ukraine’s work is the systematic recording and proof of Russia’s violations of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
One of the important achievements of Ukraine was the re-election to the Executive Council of the OPCW in 2022, which makes the main decisions of the organization. The ambassador noted that it was also possible to prevent the election of Russia to this structure, which deprived it of the opportunity to influence the agenda and participate in the adoption of key decisions of the international organization. At the same time, Kostin emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s active work on international platforms to draw attention to Russia’s numerous violations of international law and the protection of national interests.
The ambassador also emphasized the importance of cooperation with the OPCW within the framework of training Ukrainian specialists. More than a hundred representatives, in particular, employees of the SBU and the State Emergency Service, have undergone specialized trainings of the OCP. This allows you to correctly collect evidence and samples for their further presentation at the level of international organizations. Such actions contribute to proving the facts of Russia’s violation of both the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and other international legal obligations, including the UN Charter, the Rome Statute, and the Geneva Conventions.
