No American servicemen were injured in the incident, and no American equipment was damaged.
“Persistent harassment and threats by Iran in international waters and airspace will not be tolerated. Iran’s unnecessary aggression near US forces, regional partners, and commercial vessels increases the risk of collision, miscalculation, and destabilization in the region,” the US Central Command said.
After that, oil prices jumped to session highs as investors weighed the risk of a wider escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
It will be recalled that on January 28, US President Donald Trump announced the approach of a large-scale American fleet to the shores of Iran and called on Tehran to immediately sit down at the negotiating table to conclude a nuclear agreement, threatening a large-scale strike.
On February 6, on the day of talks in Istanbul between the US and Iran regarding its nuclear program, the foreign ministers of six more Middle Eastern countries are planning to arrive there.
At the same time, Iran demands to change the place and format of negotiations regarding the nuclear agreement with the USA.
If Iran’s new demands derail Friday’s talks, they risk pushing President Trump away from the diplomatic path and pushing him toward a military option at a time when he has already concentrated massive military power in the Persian Gulf.
