The World Bank will allocate 40 million US dollars to restore the energy system of Ukraine, which suffered significant damage as a result of attacks by the Russian Federation.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the relevant agreement following negotiations with the World Bank’s managing director for operational activities, Anna Bjerde. The funds will be directed to NEC “Ukrenergo” for the urgent purchase of critical equipment that will stabilize the operation of networks in conditions of low temperatures and ongoing hostilities.
This financial assistance is part of the World Bank’s broader strategy to support the viability of Ukrainian infrastructure, which remains a priority target for Russian attacks. The new equipment is supposed to replace destroyed transformers and components of high-voltage lines, which will help reduce the duration of power outages for millions of consumers. In addition, the parties discussed further cooperation within the framework of the RE-Power project, which involves the development of distributed generation and strengthening the protection of energy facilities against future threats.
Today, the World Bank remains one of the key financial partners of Ukraine, mobilizing resources to support both budgetary stability and technical restoration of energy hubs. Coordination of efforts with international institutions allows Ukraine to respond more quickly to challenges caused by Russian aggression and prepare the system for further integration with the European ENTSO-E network. The implementation of this purchase will begin in the near future in order to strengthen the stability of the energy system as quickly as possible.
As part of the winter support program, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provided Ukraine with 42 more generators of various capacities, which are already being sent to the frontline regions to stabilize the operation of critical infrastructure.
Kyiv region received the first aid package from Poland – 35 generators of various capacities and 18 oil heaters. This is the first stage of a large support program, which should ensure the stable operation of critical infrastructure in the region.
