Human Rights Activists News Agency reported on the detention. The reason for the arrest was the signing of an open letter sharply criticizing the actions of the Iranian authorities during the suppression of mass protests. Mahmoudiyan was among 17 prominent lawyers, artists and civil activists who publicly accused Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of responsibility for the deaths and mass arrests of thousands of protesters.
According to human rights defenders, the place of detention of Mahmudiyan and other detainees is currently unknown. The Iranian authorities have not officially commented on the situation, nor have they announced what charges have been brought against them. At the same time, BBC Persian reports that the screenwriter managed to contact the family and the lawyer.
As The New York Times writes, human rights defender Mehdi Mahmoudiyan was repeatedly under arrest. In prison, he met the director Jafar Panahi, with whom he later worked on the film “A Simple Coincidence”. The tape tells the story of former political prisoners who kidnap a man, considering him to be their executioner.
The film won a number of international awards, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Gotham Awards for director, screenplay and best international film. The picture was nominated for the “Oscar” for the best original screenplay and is presented in the “International Feature Film” category.
