Barro’s direct speech: “France has never ruled out the principled possibility of dialogue with Russia, provided full transparency with Ukraine and its European partners and, of course, provided it is useful.”

Details: At the same time, according to the minister, the Europeans should have a dialogue with the Russian Federation so that issues affecting Europe are not resolved without its participation.

“The Europeans, who are currently Ukraine’s main financial and military allies, should have a channel to defend their interests without delegating responsibility to anyone else,” Barro added.

We will remind:

  • In December, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe must find a way to engage directly with the Russian leader.
  • Italian Prime Minister George Meloni agreed with Macron.
  • On January 12, the chief spokeswoman of the European Commission, Paula Pinho, said that at a certain stage of the process of establishing peace in Ukraine, negotiations with the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, will take place, in which the EU will also take part.
  • In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he does not object to direct negotiations between European states and Russia.
